Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, has proudly secured a spot in the list of the 50 best cities in the world for 2025, as recently announced by the renowned British travel magazine, Time Out.
This is a significant achievement, as Hanoi is the only representative from Vietnam to be honored in this ranking. According to Grace Beard, travel editor at Time Out, this year’s ranking criteria included affordability, community spirit, and harmony with nature. Ranked 21st on the list, Hanoi is described as a city with a temperate climate and four distinct seasons, deeply imbued with Vietnam’s cultural and historical essence. The city has been a cradle for many renowned poets, artists, and thinkers and boasts an iconic and sophisticated culinary scene.
A Unique Blend of Tradition and Modernity
Hanoi’s charm can be felt in its Old Quarter, where visitors can savor the quintessential soul of the city—from the fragrant aroma of grilled meat at a bún chả stall on Hàng Quạt Street to the steaming bowls of phở bưng on Hàng Trống Street. Around Hoan Kiem Lake, iconic landmarks like the Hanoi Opera House and St. Joseph’s Cathedral coexist with hidden cafes tucked away in narrow alleys, offering a perfect blend of tradition and modernity.
Culinary Excellence
Hanoi’s culinary scene has been celebrated as one of the top destinations for food enthusiasts, with three Michelin-starred restaurants recognized in 2023. The city’s gastronomic sophistication has not only captivated local diners but also left a lasting impression on international visitors.
Affordability and Community Appeal
The Time Out survey also ranked Hanoi as the fourth most affordable city on the list, with 89% of respondents praising the city’s reasonable costs, from a cup of coffee to a movie ticket.
A Promising Year for Tourism
In 2025, Hanoi is expected to attract a large number of visitors with events commemorating the 50th anniversary of Vietnam’s reunification, featuring a variety of festivals and cultural activities.
The Time Out ranking reaffirms Hanoi’s status as not only the cultural heart of Vietnam but also a standout destination on the global travel map.
